Unlearning English Class

The more cold emails I write, the more I realize English class did more harm than good.

English professors and teachers want you to use fancy vocabulary that few people understand. If you use fancy vocabulary in real-life, no one understands what you want to say and you look like you're compensating.

In school, essays have word count requirements. In real-life, less is more. Each word you add to your cold email will lessen the likelihood your prospect is going to read it.

In school, these incentives get you in the bad habit of using meaningless fillers and crafting overcomplex sentences. I now try to reword sentences to their most simplest form but old habits die hard.
